Sometimes the best finds happen when someone who knows you hands you something without explanation. I mentioned my usual profile — spicy, earthy cedar with hints of leather — and the owner put a K60 in my hand without a word. That evening on a sunset cruise on Tampa Bay, one of those skies where orange bleeds into gold, this cigar had my full attention by the final third. Went back the next morning and lit another. Done — one of my favorites of 2025.

TL;DR
  • OZ Family Karatoba K60 Gordo — Ecuadorian Sumatra-seed wrapper, Nicaraguan core, produced at NACSA and distributed by Crowned Heads. Bold, savory, earthy complexity.
  • The name fuses Turkish for “dark” with a nod to Lake Toba in Indonesia — the wrapper seeds trace back to that same region. The attention to detail shows in the smoke.
  • BLC Rating: 92. A boutique find that doesn’t announce itself loudly but stays with you.

THE STORY BEHIND THE NAME

The Karatoba comes from Tim Ozgener and OZ Family Cigars, distributed by Crowned Heads and crafted at the NACSA factory in Nicaragua. Tim is the son of Cano Ozgener, founder of CAO International — a family with deep roots in the premium cigar world. The Karatoba name is intentional: Tim fused “kara,” the Turkish word for dark, with “Toba,” a nod to Lake Toba in Indonesia, the world’s largest volcanic lake. The Ecuadorian Sumatra wrapper uses seeds tracing back to that same Indonesian region. Name and leaf connected by design — that’s the kind of detail that shows you who you’re dealing with.

Consistent burn and confident draw throughout. Oz K delivers full smoke volume with no plugging — a well-rolled, no-drama performer.

THE FIRST THIRD

Bold savory spice right out of the gate — roasted herbs, dark earth, toasted cedar building underneath. Black pepper snaps clean on the retrohale. Draw is smooth and generous on the 6×60, burn line straight and even from the first inch.

THE SECOND THIRD

The savory character softens into richer earth, cedar taking a stronger role. Leather notes emerge on the retrohale, subtle sweetness from the Sumatra wrapper threading through. Complexity builds without crowding the palate — medium-full strength steady and smooth.

THE FINAL THIRD

Earth leads to the close, toasted cedar and black pepper sitting even up front. Leather and a quiet mustiness in the background. Long satisfying finish. Ash holds over an inch, burn stays clean. Full strength, fully composed to the nub.

OVERALL RATING

BLC OVERALL RATING

The K60 Gordo is the sweet spot in the Karatoba lineup. The larger ring gauge gives the blend more room to breathe and the savory, earthy complexity the space it needs to develop properly. A boutique find that doesn’t announce itself loudly but stays with you long after the band comes off.

WHO GRABS THIS CIGAR

For the smoker whose humidor leans dark, complex, and boutique. The savory, earthy profile is not for everyone — this is not a sweet or creamy Nicaraguan. But if you appreciate complexity that develops quietly rather than announcing itself, the Karatoba K60 belongs in a box of 21.

Pair with black coffee or espresso to draw out the earth and cedar. Ginger beer keeps the retrohale lively. For drinkers, a peated Scotch or mezcal rides the earthy, savory lane perfectly.
