WHY WE BUILT THIS COMMUNITY
Forty years. Thousands of cigars. One community that changed how I see people.
THE LOUNGE CHANGED EVERYTHING
If you've ever walked into a cigar lounge, you already know what I'm talking about. There's this thing that happens the moment you sit down with a lit cigar, the walls come down. Doesn't matter who you are, what you do for a living, or what's going on outside. Somebody asks what you're smoking, you ask what they're smoking, and suddenly you're part of something you didn't even know you needed.
I've been in boardrooms. I've been at industry events where people are performing for each other. I've never seen that in a cigar lounge. Not once. You can go in to be completely alone with your thoughts, and a lounge gives you that. You can go in with your best friends and fall into two hours of conversation that goes nowhere and everywhere. Or you can sit down next to a complete stranger and leave an hour later feeling like you've known them for years. That's the cigar culture. It's unlike anything else.
I never found that online. Not really. What I found was gatekeeping, elitism, and a whole lot of people who seemed more interested in what was in your humidor than in actually talking to you. That's not the community I knew. That's not the lounge I grew up in. So I built the one I always wanted, Blind Label Cigar. A virtual lounge where a $7 stick gets the same respect as a $300 limited release, and where the first thing we ask isn't what you're smoking but who you are.
"I've never seen a fight break out in a cigar lounge. Not once. In forty years."
- Norm Farrar, The Cigar Fossil
A RITUAL WORTH KEEPING
But if I'm being honest about where all of this really comes from, it's simpler than a philosophy. It's a memory. It's my father.
For as long as I can remember, the best moments of our time together have happened with a cigar in hand. Vacations, holidays, the in-between days that wouldn't stand out on a calendar but somehow stand out in my life. We'd sit down, light up, and something would shift. Sometimes we'd talk for hours about current events, old stories, things we'd never quite said otherwise. Sometimes we'd sit in complete silence and it was perfect. No phones. No noise. Just two people and a good smoke.
That ritual taught me something that forty years and every certification in the industry couldn't: that a cigar is never really just a cigar. It's an invitation to slow down, to be present, to connect with the person across from you, or just with yourself. That's what I want Blind Label to be. That feeling, made available to anyone who wants it, wherever they are.
